Every year, devout Hindus of all age participate in the annual Thaipusam, a time to offer penance and give thanks. Often stretching into the wee hours of the morning, the most common sight is of devotees carrying on their heads heavy pots filled with milk, while others come with their well-decorated and elaborated kavadis. Some will pierce their bodies with sharp objects.
